Meta Ads vs Google Ads: Which One Should Your Kasaragod Business Actually Start With?
Almost every client who comes to me with an ad budget asks the same question first: “Should I run Google ads or Facebook/Instagram ads?” My honest answer, every single time, comes down to one thing: where is your customer in their buying journey when they see your ad? That decides the platform, not which one is “superior.”
I’ve run both for small, local businesses — a clothing boutique, a home bakery, a couple of service providers here in Kasaragod. What actually works isn’t the same for all of them, and that’s the real lesson worth sharing.
The core difference: intent vs. discovery
Google Ads shows up when someone is already looking for what you sell. Someone types “tailoring shop near me” or “best bakery in Kasaragod” and your ad appears right there, at the exact moment they’re deciding. This is called intent-based advertising. The customer already wants something; you’re just making sure they find you instead of a competitor.
Meta Ads (Facebook/Instagram) works differently. Nobody’s searching for “boutique in Kasaragod” while scrolling Instagram. Instead, your ad interrupts someone who wasn’t necessarily looking to buy anything — but the product photo, the offer, or the story catches their attention. This is discovery-based advertising. You’re creating the want, not catching an existing one.
Neither is “better.” They solve different problems.
When Google Ads makes more sense
From what I’ve seen with local clients, Google Ads works best when:
- Your business has a clear, searchable service — plumbers, clinics, tuition centers, repair shops. People actively search for these when they need them urgently.
- You want fast, high-intent leads — someone clicking a Google ad for “AC repair Kasaragod” is often ready to call within the hour.
- Your product or service has a specific, well-known name or category that people already search for.
The catch: if almost nobody in your area is searching for your specific service yet, Google Ads won’t help much — you can’t show an ad for a search that isn’t happening.
When Meta Ads makes more sense
Meta Ads tends to work better when:
- Your product is visual — clothing, food, home decor, handmade items. People don’t search for these by name; they discover them through photos.
- You’re building brand awareness from scratch — a new business nobody’s heard of yet needs to be seen, not searched for.
- You want to retarget people who’ve already visited your website or Instagram page but didn’t buy — this is genuinely one of the most cost-effective things Meta Ads does well.
The catch: it takes more creative effort — good photos, a clear offer, consistent testing — and results build up over weeks, not instantly.
What I actually recommend to small businesses starting out
Here’s the honest, unglamorous truth: most local businesses in Kasaragod should start with Meta Ads, not Google Ads. Here’s why — Google Ads requires people to already be searching for you in meaningful numbers, and for hyper-local businesses, that search volume is often just too small to make the budget worth it yet. Meta Ads lets you build visibility and demand from zero, with a smaller starting budget (₹300–500/day is enough to test).
Once you have a website getting some traffic and people are starting to search your business name or service type on Google, that’s usually the right time to add Google Ads into the mix to capture the demand you’ve already built.
A realistic budget expectation
I won’t oversell this: with a small budget (₹5,000–10,000/month), you won’t see huge numbers on either platform. What you can realistically expect in the first month is learning which ad creative works, which audience responds, what your actual cost per inquiry looks like. Months two and three are usually where the real results start showing, once the platform’s algorithm has enough data to optimize properly.
Anyone promising instant, dramatic ROI from a small first-time ad budget is not being fully honest with you.
